Custom Orthotic Fitting

Foot Problems:

All common foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, calluses and corns, etc. are usually caused by the lack of arch (flat feet) in the foot when we stand , walk, or run.  There are a number or reasons why most of us have some degree of flat feet but it mainly comes down to body weight, gravity and concrete.  The first two are constantly flattening the foot against the hard surfaces we all live on.  The ligaments that support the bones in our feet become stretched out and our arches flatten.

Typical Orthotics:

Most orthotics are made based on unproven assumptions on how to control the foot that defy the laws of biomechanics and simple engineering.  In fact, the majority of medical studies performed on the effectiveness of standard orthotics compared to off the shelf cushions have demonstrated the same effectiveness, or should we say ineffectiveness.  Usually the arches in these orthotics are minimal, partly because the manufacturers are concerned that the casts they receive from practitioners are unreliable, and because the flatter the orthotic the less chance the user will be uncomfortable.  Because typical custom orthotics and off the shelf cushions avoid fully supporting the arch they avoid preventing the arch from collapsing and are merely just expensive to the patient.

PRC and Sole Supports:

There are three critical things that an orthotic has to have in order to be effective.

  • Orthotics must capture the properly corrected position of the foot (as high as an arch can make with maintaining the heel and the forefoot on the ground
  • Orthotics must make full contact with the entire foot in the corrected position to have the mechanical power to control the foot while
  • Orthotics must be rigid enough to maintain this correct position against the person's weight and must be flexible enough to be confortable upon impact with a typical concrete floor

Sole Supports are the only orthotic on the market that accomplish these critical areas and are made to last a lifetime.

* Custom Orthotics treat the cause of the condition statically while physical therapy treats the cause and the symptoms of the condition dynamically.  Successful outcomes are more commonly seen when the cause and the symptoms of the condition are treated simultaneously, not only for short term relief but for long term relief.  PRC incorporates both philosophies into their treatment plans.  Our therapists will initially fit you with the proper orthotic and while you adjust to the orthotic, pain, inflexibility and weakness will be addressed with a proper physical therapy program.
